Vitamin Supplementation – Summary by Medical Illness

The following is an alphabetical compilation of some common medical illnesses and the vitamin supplements that may relieve or improve associated symptoms.

Acne:an inflammatory process of the skin resulting from increased oil production resulting in plugging of the pores. Vitamin A, B complex particularly riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), vitamin D, vitamin E

Allergies: an immune mediated inflammatory process triggered by food or environmental substances. B complex including pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), vitamin A, vitamin D

Alcohol consumption: those consuming alcohol daily especially more than one drink for women or two drinks for men. thiamine (B1), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), choline, vitamin A, vitamin D

Anemia: low red blood cell count. Riboflavin (B2), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12) vitamin C, vitamin E

Antibiotic therapy: antibiotics kill bacteria, including the normal bowel bacteria which produce some of our vitamins. riboflavin (B2), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), vitamin C, vitamin K

Anxiety: nervousness or vague feeling of unease/apprehension. niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), choline

Arthritis: an inflammatory disorder of the joints. vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, folate (B9)

 

Cancer or increased risk: Please note that people on chemotherapy should not take supplemental vitamins unless instructed to do so by their oncologist. These vitamins may be used at the completion of treatment or in an effort to reduce cancer risk. thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), biotin (B7), folate (B9), vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E

Cataracts: vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6),

Confusion:thiamine (B1), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), cobalamin (B12)

 

Depression: diagnosed by feeling down or “blue” most everyday for at least 2 weeks. It may impair sleep, appetite, memory, concentration and interest in social activity.

B complex especially thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), choline, vitamin D

Dermatitis, Psoriasis or Skin disorders: an inflammation of the skin. riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), vitamin A, vitamin D

Diabetes: biotin (B7), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), choline, vitamin A, vitamin D, niacin may increase blood sugar

Dialysis: folate (B9), vitamin D

Digestive Problems: including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and inflammatory diseases like colitis and Crohns. thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), vitamin D

Dizziness: riboflavin (B2)

 

Eye problems: such as burning, itching, gritty sensation or visual changes especially at night. Vitamin A, B complex especially riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), vitamin C, vitamin D

 

Fatigue: B complex including riboflavin (B2), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), choline, vitamin A, vitamin C,

 

Hair loss: riboflavin (B2), biotin (B7), choline

Headaches: riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), folate (B9)

Heart Disease: vitamin A, thiamine (B1), folate (B9), vitamin D, vitamin E

High Cholesterol: niacin (B3), choline

High Homocysteine levels: B complex including pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), choline

 

Immune disorders: pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), vitamin C

Insomnia: thiamine (B1), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), choline, vitamin A

Irritability: thiamine (B1), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9)

 

Mouth, teeth, gum and tongue diseases: riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), vitamin A, vitamin E,

Osteopenia/Osteoporosis: increased fragility of the bone. vitamin D, vitamin K

Smoking: vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E

Stress: B complex including thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), cobalamin (B12), choline, vitamin C, vitamin A

Taking:

Birth Control pills: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6), folate (B9), vitamin C

Caffeine (more than 2 cups daily) thiamine (B1), choline

Diuretics (water pill): thiamine (B1), folate (B9)

Estrogen Replacement: riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), vitamin C, vitamin E

Stomach Acid Blockers: folate (B9), cobalamin (B12)

    I take Super B complex plus Vitamins C and D.
    And I try to exercise daily.

    I have copied this list, now have Vitamin B complex tablets for both myself and my husband. This is a great source for the reasons to take vitamins and also to encourage me to add another pill!

    Wonderful list! It seems most of my complaints can be helped by the “Bs”. Can you suggest a specific manufacturer that offers the most complete B vitamin supplement?
